Periodized Training is the process of planning training over an extended period of time in order to achieve high performance at targeted times for major competitions. Periodized Training is characterized by cycles of training load and recovery.
Periodized Training Plans involve the following terms:
Training Plans for Sprinters, Hurdlers and Jumpers on the OCP: Personal coaching and training packages, including mesocycle training plans (4-week or 6-week) and macrocycle training plans (12-week up to 36-week), as well as personal coaching conferences, are available through membership to the OCP. Video analysis is also available.
Training Plan Consultation for Track and Field Coaches on the OCP: Coaches outside the state of Ohio who coach sprints, hurdles, and jumps can also get mesocycle training plans (4-week or 6-week) and macrocycle training plans (12-week up to 36-week) for their team training, as well as consultation conferences through membership to the OCP. Video analysis is also available for coaches.
Periodized Training Plans involve the following terms:
- Macrocycle: A period of training consisting of the total period of time from the beginning of training up to the most important competition. A macrocycle can include an entire year plan, but often the macrocycle is your season plan (especially at the high school level when many of your athletes are only with you for your season).
- Mesocycle: A 4-6 week training period which is typically characterized by a training theme (ie. a goal for the desired adaptations during that cycle). Many Mesocycles are constructed as 4-week cycles because of the convenient fit with the calendar.
- Microcycle: 7-10 day training period.
